Trading Cards and Sorcery

One of our newest discoveries, and a lifesaver for Alex, was Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom. This interactive game, similar in some ways to the Phineas and Ferb adventures at Epcot, utilizes trading cards with various features. The objective is to help the wizard Merlin defeat villains who are trying to take over the Magic Kingdom. To begin, guests need to pick up initial card packs at either the Fire Station on Main Street or across from Sleepy Hollow Refreshments in Liberty Square. Each guest can receive one pack of 5 cards per day, and one guest will be the “keymaster”. It is this guest’s MagicBand or plastic park ticket which will activate the game’s portals throughout the park. A map is also given to each party, along with a short introduction on how to play and the location of the first adventure.

Our first adventure started on Main Street and had five locations. At each location, you stand on the “Circle of Power”, a bronze circle in the pavement. Facing the “Mystic Portal”, usually store windows, you hold up your park pass or MagicBand and an animation will appear. The animation will consist of either a villain to defeat, additional information about the battle, or directions to your next portal. A different villain is in each of the participating lands in the Magic Kingdom. At Main Street, the first villain we encountered was Cruella De Vil. Alex had to decide which of our 15 cards would best defeat her and hold it up to the portal. If he was right, she would be defeated by whatever weapon was on the card. For instance, the Fairy Godmother card would unleash flying pumpkins, while Tiana would pour hot sauce on the villain. If he was wrong, he would choose another card to hold.

After completing the battle on Main Street, Alex went to the three other participating lands — Liberty Square/Frontierland, Adventureland, and Fantasyland. As he watched other players and met a few serious players, he learned tricks — such as that some villains are more susceptible to various types of actions. Each card has one of nine different spell types (mystic, toy, warrior, and so forth) and seven different types of actions (charming, flying, energy, and so forth). You can hold up to 8 cards at one time, though Alex only held up 4 at a time. He said he could only hold 2 in each hand. Serious players had card binders that would hold 8 cards per page, and they would use these pages to attack. The cards also have point values for attack, boost, and shield, but as far as Alex could tell, only the attack numbers had any significance.

After the first round of battles, players can participate in a second round, with different villains in each land. This second round ends with a battle against Hades and seems to conclude the game, unless you want to play all over again. If you do, not only will
